When the sky turns into reds, oranges and purples and lights up the ocean it can be a perfect end of the day or a great beginning of an evening. With endless opportunities and great locations around the island you should put a Phuket sunset on your must do list. Where Is the Best Place to Watch Sunsets in Phuket?
While there are many great spots, we have narrowed it down to our top 5 favorite places to watch the sunset in Phuket Thailand!
First Here are Some Tips for Sunset Watching in Phuket Thailand.
- Just like snowflakes, no two sunsets are the same! You can watch the Phuket sunset at the same spot every evening and see something amazingly different each time.
- Overcast or rainy days can offer some of the best sunsets in Phuket. Magnificent colors coming through the clouds can make a great cloudy day experience.
- If you are walking to the beach stop by a mini-mart to grab some water, drinks and snacks for the beach! Remember a lot of these sunset spots don’t have rubbish cans, so bring it in and bring it out!
- Don’t leave right after the fantastic Phuket sunset. Many times, the most stunning colors come out shortly after the sun has gone down – it’s called “the afterglow”.
Big Buddha
Big Buddha is one of the Phuket’s largest and most respected landmarks. The magnificent 45-metre-high statue stands on top of the Nakkerd Hills between Kata and Chalong and can be seen from all over the Southern part of Phuket. The revered statue offers unbelievable 360-degree views of Phuket. The statue is made with concrete layers and finished with Burmese white jade marble that shines beautifully in the sun. At dusk the glowing silhouette of the Buddha is just inspiring. Here you can watch the sun setting behind Karon Bay. There are a few restaurants with great Chalong Bay views on the way up, so you can enjoy a snack or dinner before or after the sunset.
If you are an early-birder, then you can view incredible sunrises from this spot. Posted opening hours are: OPEN 6:30-18:30 EVERY DAY
Promthep Cape
Probably one of the most visited sunset location on Phuket is Promthep Cape, also known as Laem Promthep. This sunset hotspot offers stunning views of Racha Yai and Racha Noi islands to the south, and Ya Nui and Nai Harn beaches to the north. Palm trees line the walkway which show off an expansive view of the cape and Phuket sunsets in the distance. Want a little extra adventure, take a short hike down to Promthep Cape peninsula and get a different view from below. This location offers two great Phuket sunset spots!
Ao Yon Yai & Ao Yon Noi
On the southeast of Phuket are two spectacular beaches, Ao Yon Yai and Ao Yon Noi Beach. Remember from one of my latest blogs on Thai language yai = big, noi = small. These two beaches, Big & Small, are connected by a small rocky path.
It is a short drive from Phuket Town, so if you are seeing the sites of old town, it might be worth a side trip to watch the sunset at one of these great beaches. Here you can sit on soft sand and watch amazing Phuket sunsets over Chalong Bay with Ko Lon island in the foreground.
There are several small restaurants on these beaches and a good opportunity to try some local Thai food or an ice cold Singha or Chang Beer while enjoying the skies turn different colors at the end of the day.
Patong Beach / West Coast Beaches
If you like the hustle and bustle of a city resort town then Patong Beach is a great place to enjoy the sunsets. Situated on the west coast of Phuket Island, it is a short drive from Kata Beach and Karon Beach. This is one of the busiest beaches in Phuket with a huge beautiful crescent shaped bay. Patong Beach is lined with many bars and restaurants where you can enjoy the sunsets or just sit on the sand with a cold drink. The captivating sunset views from this special beach is a real treat. After the sunset there lots of things to see and do. When you visit Patong Beach you will certainly not get bored!
Surin Beach
Up the coast and north of Patong Beach is Surin Beach, possibly one of the most picturesque beaches in Phuket and boasts of 800 meters of white sand. Watch as the sun dips down and falls into the clear-blue waters of the Andaman on a peaceful beach so close and yet so far, from the bustling town of Patong. This tranquil and popular beach is located in the middle of Phuket. Ten kilometers north are Bang Tao Beach and Layan Beach, which offer excellent Phuket sunsets too. You can choose to eat from many good restaurants, bars and resorts in the vicinity.
